Computer Information Security
The University of Florida encourages the practice of healthy computing. As such, UF offers the following resources to help you protect and secure your identity and assets. For more information on information security, visit UF's Network Services Public Security Information Web site.
Virus Protection
Students of the University of Florida are entitled to a single licensed copy of McAfee VirusScan Desktop Protection.
If you do not have an anti-virus application installed on your computer, you may download and install the McAfee Viruscan Desktop Protection software directly from UF's Software Licensing Services. Downloading from UF's Software Licensing servers will require the use of UF's Virtual Private Networking (VPN) client software as only computers directly connected to the UF network are able to access those servers. Refer to the section below for instructions on how to obtain the VPN client software.
Remember to take the time to update your virus definition files and/or run full system scans at least once a week. Monthly virus definition updates are also available on UF's Software Licensing servers
Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
The University of Florida allows students and faculty to connect to its network through its Virtual Private Networking Services. Using the free client available from the Virtual Private Networking Service web site and your GatorLink username and password, you can access various resources as though you were connected directly to the UF network on campus.
Downloading the VPN client installation file requires your GatorLink username and password. After installing the VPN client software, you can run the client and connect to the UF VPN by signing in with the same username and password. You will then be able to access UF resources such as the Software Licensing servers mentioned above.
Security Updates
Keeping your Microsoft Windows Operating System secure with free Windows Updates is an important part of securing your computer. The critical updates available on Microsoft's Windows Updates site fix security vulnerabilities recently discovered within the Windows family of operating systems and their components.
